The spring semester is busy for Gary FFA & 4-H as students participate in a variety of events. We are now in “CDE Season” or Career Development Event Season!
Career Development Events teach students about areas of agriculture in a competitive manner. Gary FFA & 4-H have a record number of students participating and competing in 9 areas of CDE contests this year.
Today, Gary FFA competed in the “Forage CDE” and the “Forestry CDE” while Gary 4-H had several teams in the “Forestry CDE.”
Forages:
Students apply their knowledge of various forage species to evaluate hay based on physical properties, identify species common to pastures and complete quiz that tests team members’ knowledge of different aspects of forages. Teams consist of 3 or 4 members.
Forestry:
Skills learned from this event range from forestry equipment identification to calculating a forest business management problem and prepare students for a variety of careers in forestry and natural resources.
These teams will compete in several “practice” contests to prepare for their District, Area, and State Contests in April!

Due to a band competition within our district, the JH District Meet scheduled for both March 25th and 26th has been moved to just March 26th starting at 2pm at Shelbyville.

Due to possible weather, Thursday's scheduled Track meet at Cushing High School has been changed to tomorrow!

Our final blood drive of the school year will be on Tuesday, April 2nd! Pre-registration is now available!

Congratulations to two of our seniors, Abbie Cummings and Alyssa Thompson, for being scholarship recipients from the Panola Archery Club! Abbie received the Frank Miller scholarship and Alyssa received the Johnathan Holland scholarship!

Raising livestock isn’t a “simple” or “easy” task. Students commit to the time and effort that raising a quality animal requires and they do what they can to be “successful”. That word means so many things in the livestock world!
Connally and Colston Cranford just finished up their year of showing, attending three of the four major livestock shows (Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston) this spring and being competitive! To get to the level these boys compete, it takes practice and perseverance! They attend jackpot shows, help other exhibitors with their projects (they even taught Ms. Shadix how to show a lamb!!) and they never let a chance pass by to improve and grow!
Connally and Colston are special livestock exhibitors because they BREED AND RAISE their own show lambs, with their parents! They assist in the business of researching quality breeding lambs and bringing those genetics to Gary, Texas! This is something very few students have the opportunity to do and we are excited to watch them grow!
Congrats to Connally and Colston Cranford on an amazing year!!

Just a reminder that we have both Bunny Grams and Easter Bunny pictures coming soon! Order forms are available at the Elementary office, but the Bunny-grams and pictures are available for all students at Gary ISD!

CONGRATULATIONS to Braylon Seals for exhibiting his Dark Cross Barrow at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo!
Braylon wasn’t able to secure a sale place, but he did an OUTSTANDING job against hundreds of other exhibitors from across the state!
Major livestock shows are no easy task! The amount of work leading up to and preparing for these shows rivals nothing else! Texas has more opportunities for our students than any other state through major livestock shows and students qualify for scholarships based on participation, not placings!
Gary FFA has grown tremendously over the last few years and our students are benefiting from all of the new experiences in so many ways!
