We hope our students are enjoying their summer, and that they are willing to spend some time throughout their fun schedules also reading stories they enjoy! Reading during the summer helps keep kids' minds sharp, and help prevent learning loss. The Sammy Brown library offers a fun summer reading program that all students can enjoy, and Pizza Hut is offering their Camp BOOK IT! program where kids can get a personal pan pizza each month from June through August for meeting reading goals!

McKenzie Coleman was Reserve Champion Junior Prepared Speaker at the Longview FFA District Contest on May 7th out of the 23 schools in our district. That morning at 5:45am she set out for the Area Competition in Pittsburg comprised of OVER 100 schools! FFA Contests are not “broken down” by the size of districts, but location of the school. So HUGE schools compete against small ones. In our FFA Area there are schools with over 800 FFA Members, Gary has 68. 😲 McKenzie was FOURTH in Junior Prepared Speaking this morning!! Only the top two advance to the state contest, but we couldn’t be more PROUD of her accomplishment! TOP FOUR IN AREA IS AMAZING! On the way home from the contest she asked Ms. Shadix, “do you think we can make it to the playoff baseball game in Nacogdoches to cheer them on?” And OF COURSE that is what they did!! From FFA competitions to cheering on the Bobcats, this girl puts in 100% effort at all times!! Congrats McKenzie!

Fifth and sixth grade student lighthouse members had a wonderful and meaningful time serving yesterday at the Highway 80 Rescue Mission in Longview. We were given a tour of their facilities, served lunch, cleaned up, and shared some very special moments with the staff and guests. Big thanks for our 2nd grade students for their generous clothing by donations!

This year at the Elementary, students were encouraged to read and take AR tests to reach 1,000,000 words, and we had a few that reached that goal! To celebrate the milestone of 250,000 words read, Mrs. Cranford held a bubble party. To celebrate the milestone of 500,000 words read, she took the readers to a Nerf battle at Legacy. To our special students that reached 1,000,000 words read, they got to go on a trip to Books a Million and eat lunch out in Longview! Congratulations to all of our readers that participated in these challenges this year!
